Engineers of utility companies undergo training in safety and maintenance

Over 30 safety engineers from three utility companies in the country have undergone training to equip them with relevant skills to enable them to discharge their duties creditably.

They were drawn from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) and the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCO).

The one-week workshop provided the beneficiaries with the expertise to ensure safety and regular maintenance of equipment in the utility sector.

It was organised by Capital Group Limited, a human resource and consultancy firm in Ghana,  and Datatrack Systems Incorporated, a Canadian-based consultancy firm.

Topics

They were taken through topics such as strategy in maintaining equipment, reliability, techniques in solving key challenges in the sector, cost-effectiveness and timely maintenance.

The participants also interacted and shared ideas on ways to enhance the nation’s utility sector to improve its economic fortunes.

Maintenance

Later in an interview with the Daily Graphic, the President of Datatrack Systems Incorporated, Mr Ben Stevens, said regular and constant maintenance of machinery ensured reliability and productivity.

According to him, there is the need for the nation to invest more in safety and maintenance than to wait for equipment to break down before they are fixed or replaced.

“If Ghana is looking for higher productivity, then there is the need to look critically at maintenance of equipment in the utility sector,” he said.

That, he observed, was necessary in resolving some of the challenges, especially in the power sector, since it was inappropriate to wait for equipment to break down before fixing it.

Impact

The workshop would enable the beneficiaries to make key recommendations to top management on the need for regular maintenance of equipment.

Mr Stevens said both Capital Group and Datatrack Systems would make elaborate recommendations to the utility companies for implementation.

Some of the participants expressed appreciation to the organisers and facilitators for the programme,  which they described as successful.
