Speaking at the passing-out of 324 recruits of the Ghana Immigration Service at Assin Fosu Training School last Friday, the Minister of Interior, Mr Kwesi Ahwoi, said “we will not tolerate persons who will exploit our hospitality”.

Mr Ahwoi noted that the government had directed the Ghana Immigration Service to renew and streamline its border control mechanisms to ensure that only legal migrants entered the country.

He said the government had also asked the service to step up its post-entry enforcement to ensure that foreigners complied with all laws and intensify screening of travellers and collaborate with other related agencies to help prepare for the growing threat of terrorism and human trafficking across the nation’s borders.

He assured the international community that the government’s efforts to control the activities of illegal migrants involved mostly illegal miners. No xenophobic motives were intended, the minister said, adding that the government appreciated and encouraged foreign investments as part of its development process.

“However, we expect all foreign nationals to comply with our immigration and other relevant laws. Genuine investors would be supported with the relevant migration permits,” he stated.

Mr Ahwoi commended the GIS for efforts at developing the right calibre of staff to regulate the activities of foreigners.

He charged the new recruits to uphold and promote the principles of the service and avoid bribery and corruption and cautioned that anyone who broke the rules of the service would face dire consequences.

He assured the service that the government would continue to support its infrastructure development.

Awards were presented to deserving officers with Ms Gloria Mensah emerging as the best in academics and also the Overall Best Recruit.
