Fuel tanker goes up in flames at Assin Fosu

A tanker carrying fuel went up in flames at Assin Fosu Friday morning destroying property worth thousands of Ghana cedis.

Eyewitnesses said the incident happened on an overhead bridge in the centre of the Assin Fosu township in the Market centre. 

The bridge has an underpass for trains.

The fuel tanker was said to be in motion when the incident happened.

An eyewitness, named only as Mends, who is a 2011 National Best Farmer, Second Runner Up told Peace FM that the fuel tanker was on its way to Kumasi.

He said the fire had spread to nearby houses and expressed fear that some people might have been trapped in their homes.

Some other eyewitness account said the tanker crashed into a truck that had offloaded a quantity of cement into a warehouse in the vicinity and was reversing.

The fire is said to have spread to the train station at Assin Fosu.

No deaths have been reported.

Personnel from the Fire Service are on the scene trying to put out the fire.
