GAEC appoints Prof. Francis Hasford as new Deputy Director General

The board of the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC) has appointed medical physicist Prof. Francis Hasford as its new Deputy Director General, effective Monday, June 16, 2025.

His appointment follows the retirement of his predecessor, Prof. Dickson Adomako, who reached the compulsory retirement age of 60 after serving the Commission for 23 years.

Prof. Hasford, whose impeccable career spans 17 years as a medical physicist, has served in various capacities at GAEC, in Ghana, and with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Prior to assuming his new role, he was Head of the Department of Medical Physics at the Graduate School of Nuclear and Allied Sciences (SNAS), University of Ghana, and Director of the Radiological and Medical Sciences Research Institute, GAEC.

A statement issued in Accra on Tuesday and signed by the Director of the Commercialisation and Communication Directorate, Anthony Nana Boateng, said internationally, Prof. Hasford is the President of the Federation of African Medical Physics Organisations (FAMPO), an Executive Committee Member of the International Organisation for Medical Physics (IOMP), and a Project Counterpart of the IAEA.

Additionally, he serves as an Executive Member of the Ghana Young Academy, and is Vice President of the Ghana Society for Medical Physics.

Prof. Hasford brings a wealth of experience and expertise in nuclear science and related technologies to this critical leadership role. His outstanding contributions led to the establishment of GAEC’s annual flagship programme on cancer awareness and free screening.

Furthermore, his involvement in numerous committees on policy development, research, training, and mentorship aligns with GAEC’s vision to promote the peaceful use of nuclear science and technology for the socio-economic development of Ghana and the subregion.
