7 Professors inducted into Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences

Seven professors have been inducted into the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences (GAAS) for demonstrating excellence in their respective fields of specialty that has contributed to national development.

The inductees are Professor of Poultry Science, Prof. Samuel Egyir Aggrey; health expert advisor and Professor of Surgery, Prof. Joe-Nat Afutu Clegg-Lamptey; Professor of Population Studies, Prof. Samuel Nii Ardey Codjoe; and Professor of Chemistry, Prof. Godfred Darko.

The rest are Professor of Pharmacology, Prof. Emmanuel Bekoe Larbi; Professor of Animal Science, Prof. Frederick Yeboah Obese; and Professor of Food and Science and Technology, Ibok Ekpenyong Nsa Oduro.

They were inducted at the first day of the Founder’s Week celebration in Accra on Tuesday, November 12.

On the theme: “Leveraging the fourth industrial revolution,” the week's celebration marks the 65th anniversary of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences.

The new fellows were guided to make their declaration and sign the register of the fellowship.

In attendance were Immediate Past President of GAAS, Prof. Samuel Sefa-Dedeb, as the chairperson of the induction session; President of the academy, Prof. Kofi Opoku Nti; former Honorary Secretary of GAAS, Prof. Ben Abunu and other fellows and dignitaries.

Also in attendance were students from Labone Senior High School and Presbyterian Boys' Secondary School (PRESEC).

Prof. Nti said the GAAS was excited to have the new inductees as fellows and he expressed the hope that they would work to strengthen the academy through their contribution to its diverse programmes and activities.

“We are hopeful that you will help to energise the academy with new ideas, innovation and infectious commitment to the vision and value of the GAAS.

Strategic plan

The president stated that the vision of the academy, as articulated in the strategic plan 2020 to 2025, is to be Ghana’s merit-based society committed to national development in the advancement of the country’s well-being.

He said the core values of the academy were relevance, integrity, professionalism and excellence.

“Let the vision and values guide you throughout your fellowship. You are joining an academy that has been in existence for 65 years and continuously delivered a diverse range of activities to promote the study and dissemination of knowledge,” he said.
