Akyem Manso undertakes clean-up exercise

The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Asene-Manso-Akroso, Eric Ahinakwah, and the chief of Akyem Manso, Obrempong Sintim Poku III, have led the people of Manso to undertake a five-hour communal labour to improve sanitation in the area.

Staff of some organisations including Ghana National Fire Service, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the district assembly, assembly members and the constituency executives of the National Democratic Congress also joined the voluntary work.

NADMO provided equipment such as wheelbarrows, shovels, pickaxes, rakes, hand gloves and nose masks to enhance the work.

The volunteers cleared weedy surroundings, desilted choked gutters and swept the streets in the town and the local health centre.

Commendation

Addressing the volunteers, the DCE commended them for their communal spirit and urged them not to make the exercise a nine-day wonder.

He said the voluntary work was in line with President John Mahama’s vision for every community to organise communal labour once every month to improve their environment.

Mr Ahinakwah stated that the district assembly would organise similar exercises in Akyem Akroso, Asene and Manso in September, October and November, respectively.

He advised all residents of the community to take an active interest in communal labour to raise the quality of life of the people.

Task force

Mr Ahinakwah announced that the district assembly would soon set up a sanitation task force to deal with residents who were caught deliberately dumping refuse in their environment to serve as a deterrent to others.

For his part, Obrempong Sintim Poku said he ordered the closure of all shops and markets in the community for all traders to participate in the voluntary work that day.

Henceforth, he said any resident who failed to take part in communal labour would be fined two bags of cement to be used on ongoing development projects in the town.

Obrempong Sintim Poku made a passionate appeal to the government to complete the Oda-Agona Swedru main road project which had been abandoned by the contractor to facilitate the movement of the people.

He also urged the government to repair the overhead bridge in the town used by schoolchildren that had developed cracks as a result of a tipper truck which hit it recently.
