Cleric lauds President Mahama for slashing hajj fare

An Islamic scholar, Sheikh Yusuf Umar Jallo, has praised President John Dramani Mahama for significantly reducing the Hajj fees, calling the move a compassionate act that eases the financial burden on Ghanaian Muslims seeking to fulfil a key pillar of Islam.

In a statement issued in Accra, Sheikh Jallo congratulated Muslims across Ghana, commending the administration for its sensitivity to citizens' spiritual and economic needs.

“This reduction is not just financial relief; it’s an act of kindness that reflects leadership that listens and cares; “It deserves our commendation and respect", he stated.

The cleric’s remarks highlight the importance of faith-based dialogue in Ghana, which analysts say strengthens national unity and ensures policies reflect the diverse needs of citizens.

As Hajj costs remain a global challenge, Ghana’s fee reduction under President Mahama’s leadership is seen as a financial relief and a powerful affirmation of religion’s role in social welfare and national identity.

Fares

The government recently lowered the cost of Hajj from GH¢75,000 to GH¢62,000, and further to GH¢60,000, a decision that the Muslim community has warmly received.

Impact

Sheikh Jallo emphasised that acknowledging good deeds aligned with Islamic teachings, citing the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him:

“He who does not thank people does not thank Allah.”

The cleric described the policy as an example of “cooperation in righteousness and piety,” referencing the Qur’anic verse from Surat Al-Ma’idah (5:2).

He noted that facilitating Hajj fosters unity and strengthens faith, calling it a sacred responsibility that promotes social harmony and brotherhood among Muslims.

Sheikh Jallo further highlighted Hajj's logistical and spiritual significance, underscoring the government’s role in supporting religious observance.

“Leadership that prioritises people’s ability to fulfil their religious duties demonstrates a commitment to human dignity and divine accountability,” he said.

Inclusive engagement

Sheikh Jallo also commended President Mahama for his inclusive engagement with Ghana’s Muslim community and expressed the hope that such policies would remain free from political influence.

“This is a tremendous achievement that reflects empathy and foresight,” he said.

He continued, “We pray it remains a lasting commitment to serving the Muslim Ummah and all Ghanaians.”

He urged Muslims to respond with prayers and unity, emphasising the Islamic principle of reciprocating kindness.

“When someone does good, we should reward them or pray for them,” he said, invoking blessings on the President and his administration for their wisdom and justice.
