Defaulting GIJ students handed lifeline to pay fees

The Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ) has decided to open a three-day window for students owing fees to complete registration processes to enable them sit their semester exams.

A flat refusal to allow the indebted students to partake in the end of semester examinations hit a snag on Sunday, when the students demonstrated in protest, leading to the cancellation of two of the papers fixed for the day.

The reprieve which follows a meeting between the management of the institute and the Student Representative Council (SRC) on Monday, stipulates that defaulting students have up to Wednesday, December 5, 2018 to register.

“The management of the school have decided to reschedule the papers that were cancelled yesterday to another day”, says a circular issued by the SRC president, Emmanuel Kumah.

In addition, the circular said management of the school has given the go ahead for the students on scholarship to also partake in the examination, while students who could not write the previous exams will take them as re-sit exams.

Students on the Students’ Loan Trust Fund would however, not be allowed to write the exams, said the circular.

Background

On Sunday, the bewildered students who were clad in red and black apparel, stormed the school campus and called for the immediate removal of the newly inducted rector of the institute, Professor Kwabena Kwansah-Aidoo.

According to the school’s regulations, continuing students are supposed to pay at least 60% of their fees in the first semester before they would be allowed to register their courses and partake in the exams.
