ECG inaugurates new switchgears at Odorkor Primary Substation
The Accra Subtransmission Division of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has inaugurated 18 new 33-kilovolt (kV) switchgears at the Odorkor Primary Substation.
The switchgears are aimed at enhancing the quality and reliability of electricity supply to over 40,000 customers relying on station.
In an interaction with the media during the inauguration, the General Manager of ECG Subtransmission in Accra, Francis K. Atsyatsya, said the initiative was pivotal to ECG’s commitment to delivering safe and reliable electricity, especially in response to the increasing demand for power in Accra.
Installation
He noted that the installation of the switchgears was part of the ECG’s broader initiative to bolster its infrastructure and enhance customer service, ultimately aiming for maximum customer satisfaction.
The installations, which are fully funded by ECG are expected to alleviate the issue of frequent outages experienced by customers in Odorkor, Sakaman, South Odorkor, Kwashieman, Official Town, parts of Dansoman, McCarthy Hill, Mallam, and Awoshie.
“With the introduction of these new switchgears, we are now equipped to provide our customers with a more reliable and improved quality of electricity supply,” he affirmed.
Necessity
The ECG Subtransmission General Manager said the installation and inauguration was necessitated by the urgent need to replace the old panels which had been in use for about 14 years.
He added that the old switchgears were less efficient and also raised safety concerns at the Primary Substation.
“These new switchgears replace outdated equipment that have been in operation for approximately fourteen years, which not only diminished efficiency but also raised safety concerns at the substation,” he stated.
He further explained that the obsolete switchgears had been a major contributing factor to the frequent power outages faced by customers served by the Primary Substation.
In addition to improving power distribution, Mr Atsyatsya said the new installations would also enhance the safety of ECG staff operating at the station. “Management emphasises the creation of a safe working environment, as the old equipment posed significant risks to our staff at the station," he remarked.
Looking ahead, Ing. Atsyatsya indicated that several additional projects were in the pipeline for completion.
Collaborate
He urged stakeholders and customers to collaborate with ECG to achieve improved services and called on customers to pay their bills promptly.
That, he emphasized, was crucial for enabling ECG to initiate further projects aimed at better serving its customers.
Mr Astyatsya also cautioned customers to be vigilant against scams, and encouraged customers to use the ECG Mobile App or the short code *226# for all ECG-related payments, and to report any suspicious activities to the police or their nearest ECG office for action.
The inauguration of the new switchgears, the general manager said marked a significant step forward in ECG's ongoing effort to provide reliable electricity to the growing population of Accra.
