GhIE Branch 4 explores opportunities with UG, Air Force

The Greater Accra Branch of the Ghana Institution of Engineering (GhIE), known as Branch 4, has explored opportunities for potential areas of collaboration with two industry facilities to strengthen the institution’s engagement with them.

This was followed by two separate courtesy calls from the GhIE to the Dean and students of the School of Engineering Sciences at the University of Ghana and the Director of Engineering at the Ghana Air Force Headquarters, Burma Camp.

The Branch 4 Chair, Kwofie Pinto, stated that the purpose of the visits was for the institution’s officials to familiarise themselves with the engineering operations and activities of the two facilities, and to encourage them to pay attention to the Engineering Council Act 2011, Act (819), and the provisions in LI 2410.

At the University of Ghana’s School of Engineering Sciences, the Dean, Prof. Elsie Effah Kaufmann, who is a Fellow of the GhIE, urged the institution to consider re-establishing the previous relationship GhIE had with the Engineering Faculty of the University of Ghana regarding active participation in the department’s management.

She said previously, the GhIE ran programmes at the university's engineering faculty and that she would like the relationship to be re-instituted.

Prof. Kaufmann explained that the university currently runs five Engineering programmes, namely Agricultural Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Food

Process Engineering, and Material Science and Engineering.

At the Ghana Air Force, the team met the Deputy Chief Staff Officer in charge of Logistics, Group Capt. Ismael Djagmah, the Director of Engineering, Group Capt. Yaw Gyimah, Wing Commander Joe Ntiamoah, and Wing Commander Selby.

Group Capt. Gyimah stated that the engineering department worked in areas of Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Agricultural Engineering and Aeronautic Engineering.

He appealed to the GhIE to consider the rigorous engineering programmes it ran and the intensive structures in place to treat members from the Ghana Air Force separately at the member-entry levels.

He further requested a special engineering professional dispensation, such as internship opportunities at other engineering establishments for their artisans and certifications for the same.

Group Capt. Gyimah advised that the GhIE considered it necessary to rope in engineers, technologists, and craftsmen practising in the Army, Air Force, and Navy to strengthen enforcement of the Engineering Council Act.

The GhIE Branch 4 delegation included the Director of Membership Services of the GhIE, Juliet M. Gbormittah.
