Let's have united Ga-Dangme — GAR House of Chiefs President

The President of the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs, Oboade Nortse King  Odaifio Welentsi III, has called for unity among the Ga-Dangme people, voicing concern over persistent divisions fueled by unresolved disputes.

He urged clans, communities and families in the region to resolve conflicts internally through dialogue with Ga-Dangme leadership rather than resorting to outsiders.

To promote peaceful conflict resolution, King Odaifio Welentsi announced that plans were underway to establish a secretariat at the Regional House of Chiefs dedicated to addressing grievances promptly.

He made this known last Saturday at a durbar in Prampram, organised by the traditional council to climax this year’s Prampram Homowo Festival celebrations.

While serious matters may still go to the Judicial Committee, he acknowledged that delays often occurred due to bureaucratic issues.

King Odaifio Welentsi, who is also the President of the Nungua Traditional Council, emphasised that only one person could be chief in any area and, therefore, urged all to work together for the region’s development, particularly for the benefit of the youth.

“There are many prominent and capable individuals within the Ga-Dangme community.

If you have a misunderstanding with someone, or if any chief behaves offensively, reach out to the Ga-Dangme leadership.

The matter will be addressed respectfully and resolved.

If the chief or leader is found to be at fault, they will be informed and, if necessary, an apology will be made — for the sake of peace,” he said.

“There are too many divisions among the Ga-Dangmes, and I am pleading because the situation is becoming alarming.

Ga-Dangme groups have become too fragmented, with everyone doing as they please,” he entreated.

Event

The grand durbar, which was held under the auspices of the Paramount Chief of Prampram, Nene Tetteh Wakah II, brought together traditional leaders, government officials, heads of institutions and business owners, as well as people of the town and its environs.

Notable among the dignitaries were Paramount Queenmother of Prampram, Naa Osabu Abbey I; the Chief of Katamanso, Tatse Nii Laryea Akuetteh X; the Nungua Oblantai Amantse, Nii Bortey Okplen Jalesane II, and the wife of the Nungua Mantse, Naa Afriyie Nii Laryeafio II.

Other dignitaries included the Minister of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Sam Nartey George; the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Akweley Ocloo; the Metropolitan Chief Executive of Accra, Kpakpo Allotey, and the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Ningo-Prampram, Raphael Uriel Nartey.

The over five-hour ceremony was marked by a rich display of culture and tradition, including drumming, singing, dance performances, poetry recitals, and musket firing, with the participation of other tribes, Ewe and Kokomba, as well as Islamic performances.

The highlight of the day was the renewal of traditional oaths of allegiance by the chiefs of the four Divisional Clans of Prampram — Lowe, Larkple, Kley and Annorwe — to the Paramount Chief.

The 2025 Prampram Homowo Festival was on the theme: "Celebrating Culture to Deepen Our Identity and Drive Progress".

Youth

Turning attention to the youth, King  Odaifio Welentsi urged them to refrain from spreading damaging or misleading information about Ga-Dangmes on social media.

“When issues arise, we must allow our elders and leaders to resolve them.

But before you know it, everyone is in the media, granting interviews. I plead with the youth to avoid posting content that tarnishes our image.

“One day, you too will become elders, and by then, today’s leaders will be gone.

Whatever seeds you sow today in the media will come back to haunt you tomorrow. Sow good seeds, so you may reap a good harvest,” the Greater Accra Region House of Chiefs President said.
