The GH¢10 million facility which includes a hostel, teachers’ bungalow and dining hall is being funded through the Newmont Akyem Development Foundation.

Sixteen construction firms such as Answod Construction Limited, Hamany Ventures, AK Yankson Ventures, Agent Wood Enterprise and Oak Star Enterprise are executing the project which is expected to be completed within nine months.

CSR

Speaking at the sod-cutting last Friday, the General Manager of Newmont Akyem, Charles Bissiw, said the project formed part of the company’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) to improve the lot of people in the company’s operational areas.

Mr Bissiw said the project would improve teaching and learning and at the same time enhance quality education in the area.

He explained that the classrooms were supposed to assist the already existing Akyem Vocational and Technical Institute to offer additional courses such as fashion and catering while the hostel would cater for more students.

Mr Bissiw urged females to enrol in male-dominated programmes, such as metal works, in the school and asked the contractors to speed up work, ensuring quality work that would meet safety standards to prevent any calamity.

The Chief of Aduasena, Nana Boni Abankro (V), on behalf of the community, asked Newmont Akyem to leave a legacy in the community, adding that the construction of the new classroom block would be one of such legacies.
