He said this is in recognition of the role and contribution of the chieftaincy institution in national development.

Mr Machator said this at the swearing-in of the newly elected executive of the Oti Region House of Chiefs at Dambai last Wednesday.

The five-member executive of the house headed by Otekple Soglo Alloh IV was sworn into office by Justice of the High Court, Justice Joan Eyi King.

Mr Machator said in view of the vital role the institution played in national development, every effort needed to be made by all to strengthen it.

He said one of the main obstacles which had hampered effective governance at the local level was the unnecessary chieftaincy disputes that had torn communities apart and eventually halted development.

Peaceful environment

He urged the executives to be guided by the achievements of their predecessors and strive to sustain the peaceful environment which had won them a lot of respect in the country.

He said as partners in governance at the local level, they had a social responsibility to ensure a peaceful and stable environment to allow for effective governance.

Otekple Soglo Alloh IV, who is also the Paramount Chief of the Likpe Traditional Area, was grateful that the executives had been sworn into office and called for unity among the members to uplift the image of the region.
