A Member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Communications Team, Hamza Suhuyini, has stated that political branding is key to the success of political parties.
He noted that political branding often tended to be easier when in opposition than when a party is in government, as opposition parties have more time to rebrand.
That, he explained, allowed the NDC to reposition itself to win the 2024 election.
Forum
Mr Suhuyini, who is a lawyer, was speaking at a forum organised by Political Marketing Students at UniMAC in Accra last Saturday as part of a term paper, organised by the level 400 Public Relations with Marketing students of UniMAC who have chosen Political Marketing as an elective.
Held on the theme “Winning Voters, Building Trust: Political Marketing for Ghana’s Future,” the event served as both an academic exercise and a practical contribution to Ghana’s evolving political landscape.
At the heart of the forum dubbed UniMAC Political StrategyLab 2025 was a showcase of political campaign research, strategy innovation and civic engagement.
The class was divided into two consultancy teams: one focusing on the NDC, developing strategies to help the party retain power in the next general election and the other dedicated to the NPP, crafting strategies to position the opposition for a possible return to government.
Mr Suhuyini, however, said that, having gained power, the NDC had begun to slip into similar pitfalls, such as disconnecting from the citizens, a path that had previously led the New Patriotic Party (NPP) into opposition.
“And so, while the NPP has started taking baby steps toward regrouping, we, the NDC, are competing with ourselves instead of consolidating the gains made in the last elections. Unfortunately, that is the reality,” he added.
Abronye
On the remand of the Bono Regional Chairman of the NPP, Kwame Baffoe, by the Accra Circuit Court, Mr Suhuyini described the court's decision as poor .
“On the issue of the arrest of party functionaries, I think that I agree with you totally that the decision of the judge, especially in the Mr Baffoe case, defies every logic and every legal principle.
“I was embarrassed by that decision, especially as a government spokesperson; I tried to look for justification and couldn’t get any.
And this is why the President pledged to reset the Judiciary in opposition, and this is the effect of the bad political intervention of the last regime; we may not be able to cure that in eight months.”
