The gesture through the “Roses for Cancer” initiative, is part of the commemoration of the breast cancer awareness month marked in October every year.

It is also part of the activities of the fifth anniversary of the annual Plants and Flowers Fair, held  annually in partnership with the Centre for Climate Change and Sustainability Studies.

This year’s fair will be held at the University of Ghana from November 29 to December 1, 2024.

Roses for cancer

At a special presentation ceremony at Korle Bu, some members of The Flower Community Ghana together with some key partners, also donated a variety of general products and gave each of the patients a stem of rose

This Rose Flower gesture was more than symbolic; it was a message to the brave individuals that they are not alone in their fight against breast cancer.

The roses, a universal symbol of love and resilience, were given to remind them that their journey does not have to be one they walk alone.

The donation was in collaboration with the Pink for Africa Foundation, also a non-profit organisation founded by a breast cancer survivor and supported by a number of organisations including Knoxxi Health (a Mobile Health Application), Smino Gh, MGL Naturals, Delly’s Juice, and Opoku & Opoku Flower Farms.

Speaking at the event, Convener of The Flower Community Ghana, Dr  Yaw Agyemang Boafo, extolled the healing abilities of flowers beyond their symbolism of showing love and affection.

He said with their condition it was likely the patients would every now and then, feel down hearted and the gesture was intended to lend support and help lift the gloom

“We believe that flowers have a unique ability to heal and uplift the spirit. Through this initiative, we wanted to bring joy to the women at Korle-Bu, reminding them that they are not alone in their fight,” he said.

Dr Boafo expressd heartfelt appreciation to all those who bought into the idea and supported to make the donation possible.

“We are grateful to all the organisations who supported. Their contributions were vital in making this initiative a reality, and their support underscores the power of community in creating positive change,” he emphasised.

A patient who spoke on behalf of the beneficiaries also commended the benefactors for their gesture, saying: “This support means the world to us. It’s a reminder that there are people out there who care deeply about our journey.”

Environmental stewardship

The Flower Community Ghana is dedicated to promoting sustainable gardening, environmental conservation and community engagement,

It has been a beacon of environmental stewardship, hosting the Annual Plants and Flowers Fair, where they showcase the beauty and benefits of sustainable gardening.

This year, they decided to add a philanthropic element to the event to mark their five years anniversary and to create a heartwarming and memorable experience for everyone involved.

With their continued dedication to social causes, The Flower Community GH plans to expand similar initiatives, using the universal language of flowers to spread love, kindness and hope across communities.
