St Dominic Catholic Church launches 50th anniversary

The St Dominic Catholic Church at Adweso, a suburb of Koforidua in the New Juaben South Municipality of the Eastern Region, last Sunday, kick-started its 50th anniversary celebration.

On the theme: "50 Years of Living the Catholic Faith; Reflecting on the Lord's Faithfulness in Building a Synodal Church for Evangelism", the anniversary celebration will involve a year-long series of activities that reflect the church's commitment to its community and spiritual growth.

Unveiling of the anniversary logo and Lacoste shirt was done by the Chairperson of the Central Planning Committee of the church, Juliet Esinam Ussher.

Mrs Ussher prayed for God's abundant grace to manifest during the anniversary season, fostering revival and deepening the love for God and the church.

She said the church, which started as a basic Christian community, today could boast of over 400 parishioners because God had been faithful and good to the church, adding that a mission house had been built for the priest.

Mrs Ussher urged the church members to look back on what the Lord had done for the church and ultimately give glory to God.

Events

Some of the activities lined up are fundraising in aid of re-roofing the church building in August, prostate cancer awareness in September, breast cancer awareness in October, skills and exhibition fair, Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) awareness, fire safety and protection education and games night, all in November.

In December, there will be a carols night service and a holy family celebration, while an empowerment 2026 community outreach programme will be held in January.

A holy childhood celebration, blood donation, single summit and couples’ night will take place in February.

Slated for April is a symposium on the anniversary theme, while in May, there will be a mega float and health walk, as well as women's prayer sessions.

There would also be a mental health awareness event, men’s prayer and youth games in June, while in July, a homecoming event, a talk on first aid and CPR training, as well as a gospel crusade will take place.

Physical, spiritual

The Parish Priest, Very Rev. Fr Frederick Opoku Obeng, said the parish had achieved a lot, both physically and spiritually.

He said most members of the parish were workers who found it difficult to attend services; as such, new plans would be put in place to accommodate them without jeopardising their work.

Very. Rev. Fr Obeng asked members of the parish to prepare holistically for the events of the celebration.
