The Coastal Estates Branch of Top-Up Pharmacy has taken healthcare services closer to residents of Sebrepor, near Afienya, with a free screening exercise aimed at promoting preventive health care and early detection of diseases.
The programme, which began with a health walk, was organised in partnership with Sunrise Medical Centre, Perfect Health Clinic, SIMA Eye Clinic, Jibu Drink and Top-Up College of Health.
It brought together residents from Mataheko, Afienya, New Sebrepor, Shai Hills, Gbetsile and surrounding communities.
Exercise
Participants were screened for blood pressure, blood sugar, haemoglobin levels, hepatitis, malaria and typhoid.
Height and weight measurements were also taken to determine participants’ Body Mass Index (BMI).
Men aged 45 and above received Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) tests to help assess their prostate health, while eye specialists conducted visual acuity tests and other eye examinations.
Health, a priority
Speaking after the exercise held last Saturday, the Coastal Estates Branch Manager of Top-Up Pharmacy, Dr Bernice Ampomah, urged Ghanaians to make regular health checks an essential part of their lives.
“Your health is your number one priority. Regular health checks and screening are non-negotiable. As much as possible, within the year, try to get yourself checked,” she said.
Dr Ampomah encouraged the public to regularly monitor their blood pressure and blood sugar levels, particularly as some health conditions might not present obvious symptoms in their early stages.
She also urged men aged 45 and above to pay greater attention to their prostate health and advised the public against ignoring persistent symptoms or relying solely on self-medication.
Preventive health care
Dr Ampomah said the initiative formed part of Top-Up Pharmacy’s broader commitment to supporting the health and well-being of the communities it serves.
She noted that the Coastal Estates Branch, which began operations in 2022, had since undertaken several community-focused health initiatives.
She said, for instance, in 2023, the branch organised a five-day free health screening exercise, while in 2024, it followed up with a month-long free breast cancer screening programme.
The latest exercise, she added, was intended not only to provide free screening, but also to encourage residents to take greater responsibility for their health through regular check-ups and timely medical intervention.
Dr Ampomah gave an assurance that the pharmacy would continue to support preventive health care and early detection through community health initiatives across its branches in Ghana.
