UG Learning Centre screens residents, plant trees to mark anniversary

The Sekondi/Takoradi Learning Centre of the University of Ghana has provided medical care for more than 200 residents, particularly the aged in the Fonko community in the Ahanta West District of the Western Region.

Fonko, a predominantly fishing community, has no healthcare facility so the residents rely on a health post at nearby Amanful or the Kwesimintsim Hospital in the adjoining municipality.

At the end of the health exercise, residents who needed specialist care were referred to other health facilities in Effia-Kwesimintsim.

The beneficiaries were also advised on how to live a healthy life and also educated on the dangers of self medication.
The exercise formed part of activities marking the 70th anniversary of the university.

Tree planting

The Head of the Sekondi/Takoradi Learning Centre of the University, Dr Robert Afutu Kortey, said the centre had chosen unique projects aimed at contributing to the advancement of society to mark the university’s 70 years celebration.

He said aside from the medical care, the centre also planted trees in some schools in the municipality, including the  Sekondi College, to ensure a green environment to enhance teaching and learning in schools.

More than 100 tree species were planted at the Sekondi College.

Mr Kortey said the tree-planting exercise was to send signals to the children about the benefits of trees to the environment.

 Sekondi College

The Headmaster of Sekondi College, the Mr K. Yankey, commended the Sekondi/Takoradi Learning Centre of the University of Ghana for the initiative.

Trees, he said, improved the ecosystem and, therefore, the need to plant  more trees to absorb the potentially harmful gasses in the air to ensure healthier life.

He gave an assurance that the trees would be well taken care of to ensure that they served the intended purposes for the school.
