WaterAid Ghana assists deprived health centres with mechanised boreholes
Waterraid Ghana, with support from the Hong Kong Shangai Banking Corporation, has provided mechanised boreholes to the Busa Health Centre in the Wa Municipality of the Upper West Region.
The support was under the non-governmental organisation’s project, “WASH for Health Care Centres”.

The Busa Health facility is one of the oldest in the Wa Municipality. It offers services in antenatal, post natal and OPD, among others, to the inhabitants and other surrounding villages.
Access
Patients and health workers of the centre struggle to access potable water because there is none at the facility.
The Physician Assistant in charge of the Busa Health Centre, Madam Susan Tuogali, told a visiting team, which included a Field Officer from PronetNorth, Hamza Balima, that the facilities provided had made a huge difference in providing quality health care at the centre.
She said the health workers were now more eager to work while clients or patients were getting better services.
The health centre, the physician noted, was now able to store essential drugs and make them readily available to patients who needed them because there was always availability of electricity.
Electricity bill, she added, had also gone down drastically because the facility no longer depended solely on the national grid.
Gratitude
Madam Tuogali expressed gratitude to WaterAid Ghana and its partners for coming to their aid.
Some patients at the facility said they no longer struggled to fetch water from the town because they now had easy access to it at the facility, adding that their burden had reduced while at the same time accessing improved services.

The Communication and Campaign Officer of WaterAid Ghana, Ms Yvonne Kafui Nyarku, explained that the provision of the water and sanitation facilities became necessary because it was difficult to provide quality health care without access to potable water and sanitation facilities.
Lives
Ms Nyarku maintained that the facilities provided at the Busa Health Centre would help save the lives of women and children who were vulnerable.
She said her organisation worked closely with the municipal assemblies and municipal health directorate to ensure that health centres that needed such amenities most were targeted.
She advised the health centre to take good care of the facilities to prolong their lifespan.
Other communities benefiting from similar projects in the Wa Municipality include Charia, Boli and Charianga, all at a cost of GH¢190,000.
