President-elect John Mahama has reiterated his commitment to strengthen the historic ties between Ghana and the US.
In a meeting with the US Ambassador to Ghana, Virginia E. Palmer, at his private office in Accra yesterday, Mr Mahama mentioned energy, security and agriculture as some of the sectors that needed special attention to propel the country’s growth.
"I want to tell you how much we look forward to working with you to deepen the Ghana-US partnership.
"The relationship between our two countries is historic. I also want to thank you for the warm relations we have personally," he added.
Energy sector
The President-elect acknowledged the comparative advantage the US has in technology and expressed his willingness to work closely with the US to resolve the challenges in Ghana’s energy sector.
"We know that we can tap into your knowledge in that sector. We want to work closely with you to resolve some of the issues in the energy sector," he said.
Mr Mahama further highlighted the successful collaboration between the two countries on the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) project, which had made Ghana's electricity sector more resilient.
Security
The President-elect also spoke on the need to collaborate more on security matters, given the challenges in the sub-region.
"We know what the issues are in our sub-region, and the US has been a long-standing partner in terms of improving our resilience when it comes to security matters," he said.
Mr Mahama also highlighted his passion for agriculture and agribusiness and expressed his desire for knowledge sharing with the US to boost agriculture growth and food self-sufficiency in Ghana.
"One of my passions is agriculture and agribusiness, we will see how we can share technology, share knowledge to boost the agriculture sector in Ghana," he added.
Congratulatory message
The US Ambassador congratulated Mr Mahama on his victory, saying, "My mission is to congratulate you in person”.
“I bring you greetings from President Biden, and you will be hearing directly from him," she said.
