Korle Bu Medical School senior members' lounge refurbished

The Edward Mensah Wood & Associates Ltd (EMWA), an insurance brokerage firm, has handed over a refurbished senior members' lounge to the Department of Medicine, University of Ghana Medical School (UGMSC) at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH).

The lounge, named after the founder of EMWA, the late Edward Essilfie-Mensah, had undergone thorough renovations, transforming its interior from ceiling to floor.

It has also been furnished with armchairs, tables, closets with drawers, a sink, cabinets and air conditioners, to provide a comfortable space for senior members to relax while contributing to activities at the department.

Rationale

At the handing over ceremony, the Managing Director of EMWA, Yasmin Essilfie-Mensah, said that her outfit took the initiative as part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR).

That, she said, was also to honour her late father, who was a former patient of the renal unit.

"He had his own private dialysis machine, which he asked to be donated to the renal unit after his passing. That was done four years ago.

“We then decided this year to honour him by refurbishing the senior lounge and naming it after him," Ms Essilfie-Mensah explained.

She also said that the initiative reflected EMWA’s dedication to supporting the medical community and fostering improved working conditions for senior staff.

Gratitude

Prof. David Ofori-Adjei, who represented retirees and senior members, expressed gratitude for the renovation.

“This gesture shows deep consideration for the needs of our senior members. We are thankful to EMWA for their support,” he said.

The Head of the Department of Medicine and Therapeutics at UGMSC, Prof. Vincent Boima, also applauded their benefactors for the initiative.

He further encouraged more organisations to emulate EMWA's example.

“Partnerships like this significantly enhances our capacity to improve facilities. We hope to see more contributions from EMWA and others in the future,” he said.
