The car park at the Accra Mall almost filled to capacity.

Ghanaians remain calm, composed

Members of the public are going about their normal duties without any sense of insecurity, despite threats of terrorist attack in Ghana, checks by the Daily Graphic have revealed.

Many people have expressed the hope that with God on the side of the country, and the national security working at optimal level, the peace and security of the nation would remain intact.

The Daily Graphic gathered that the public seemed to be very optimistic that in the  event of an attack, the security services would effectively manage the situation to mitigate its impact.

Checks at some shopping malls in Accra last Thursday showed that business had not been interrupted by the reports of terror threats.

The shopping malls were busy with shoppers.

The car parks at the Accra Mall, the Achimota Retail Centre, popularly known as the Achimota Mall, and the Osu Oxford Street were all virtually filled to capacity.

Some shoppers who spoke to the Daily Graphic said they were not terrified by reports of terror threats, expressing hope in God and the competence of the national security.

Interviews

Two patrons of the Accra Mall, Ms Solace Anku and Nora Blevi, said they had faith in the national security apparatus and their commitment to never compromise on their mandate to ensure that the peace and security of Ghana was safeguarded.

They expressed their belief in God and the fact that He was the one that had kept watch over Ghana.

Mr Daniel Annan, another patron of the Accra Mall, said he came there on a daily basis because it was the route to his house and he was not ready to divert or stop shopping because of a terrorist threat.

At the Achimota Retail Centre, four shoppers: Akua Dufie, Martin Asante, Erica Adu and Charlotte Alottey said they had forgotten about reports of terror threats.

Akua Dufie said she had always believed that Ghana would continue to be safe due to divine interventions.

Background

Prophet T.B. Joshua is reported to have said he had received a prophecy from God that there was a planned ‘foreign attack’ on Ghana and Nigeria.

He asked members of his church to pray against the planned attacks.

The prophet even mentioned the days the attackers would strike: Thursday, Friday or Saturday.

“I see Thursday, Friday. Pray for these two nations — Nigeria and Ghana — over gathering in any way; over attack. I am seeing attack and that will be in a foreign way. The attack will come not in a local way. So please open your lips and pray for these two nations for protection,” he told the congregants.

He would, however, not state whether the said Thursday or Friday or Saturday would be in this month or the next, explaining: “Not necessarily this week, because it is a battle between the evil spirit and the holy spirit ..... ‘foreign attacks’ on Ghana and Nigeria...”

Confirmation

The security alert confirmed that a possible terrorist attack on the country was real, following the confessions of a Malian terrorist who is being interrogated by the Ivorian security agencies as the brain behind the Grand Bassam attacks.

According to the report, the alleged Malian stated that Ghana and Togo were the next targets after the attacks in Burkina Faso and Cote d’Ivoire.

The choice of Ghana, according to the report, is to take away the perception that only francophone countries are the target.
