The gesture was also to help support the plans of the prisons administration to improve the electronic compilation of criminal data and other information while gradually moving away from manual storage of inputs and retrieval of information.

Presentation

Presenting the gadgets, the Administrator of the GIFEC, Mr Kobby Acheampong, urged the service to take care of the equipment to ensure their longevity and also use them for their intended purpose.

Touching on the role of GIFEC in promoting electronic communications, he said the organisation was currently in discussions with the Bureau of National Communications to procure high frequency phones from Motorolla for security agencies such as the Ghana Prisons Service to enhance effective communication.

Mr Acheampong explained that the device, known as Tetra communication gadgets, when made available to the service would assist in escort duties as well as improve communication between its headquarters and other prison facilities in Ghana.

Gratitude

Receiving the items, the Director-General of the Ghana Prisons Service, Madam Matilda Baffour-Awuah, expressed her gratitude to the management of GIFEC for its support to the service over the years.

She recalled GIFEC’s support to the service by way of partnering it in establishing computer laboratories in some central prisons across the country to train both inmates and officers in ICT.
