The vendors used the opportunity to present some of the challenges facing the newspaper industry to the management of GCGL.

According to them, there was dominance of government news in the company’s stable and advised that there should be a balance in content.

They said much as there was the need to focus on development projects and government activities, it was equally important for the newspapers to spice up news packages with human interest, analytical stories, engaging pictures among other issues.

The vendors further suggested that the newspapers should include content that would engage readers and also ensure that there was a balance in their reportage.

Another observation made by the vendors was that the papers were mostly dominated with news from Accra and suggested that news items from the regions should also be given prominence.

They also raised issues concerning the late delivery of the newspapers saying that there were delays sometimes in getting the newspapers which in the long run affected their sales.

MD’s response

Responding to some of the concerns, the Managing Director of GCGL, Mr Kenneth Ashigbey, said although the company recognised the need for variety in the contents of its newspapers, the company was concerned about using content to promote development.

He,  indicated that the company was state-owned and as such had to serve the people’s interest.

“We are a state-owned entity and so our priority is to serve the interest of the society and also take into consideration the impact of the news content on their lives,” he explained.

Mr Ashigbey stated, however, that the company would do everything within its power to address the issues the vendors had raised to the advantage of both sides.

The editors of the various newspapers provided answers to the issues raised by the vendors and promised to factor their suggestions into their activities.
