Residents and businesses in parts of Greater Accra will experience a 15-hour power interruption on Sunday, August 23, 2026, as the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) continues work to replace a transmission tower damaged by a tanker explosion.
The interruption will affect customers in parts of the Accra West and Accra East operational areas of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
The exercise is scheduled to begin at 3 a.m. and end at 6 p.m.
The affected tower is located at the Ashaiman section of the 161kV Tema-Achimota transmission line.
GRIDCo said its engineers and technical teams would use the period to complete the remaining work on the damaged tower and restore the transmission line.
According to an ECG notice, communities in the Accra West area expected to experience the interruption include James Town, Mamprobi, Chorkor, Sempe, parts of Kaneshie, North Industrial Area, Okaishie, Agbogbloshie, Kantamanto, Adabraka, parts of Ridge, Tesano, Santana Market, parts of Alajo, Malam Atta Market, Asylum Down and surrounding communities.
In the Accra East area, the affected locations include Nima Township, Kanda Highway, Kanda Estate, Kokomlemle, Sulana, Circle, Madina Township, Okponglo, Cantonment, Osu Oxford Street and surrounding communities.
GRIDCo said the interruption was required to allow the tower replacement work to be carried out safely.
The company said it was working with ECG to reduce the effect of the outage on customers and communities in the affected areas.
GRIDCo apologised to affected residents and businesses for the inconvenience and appealed to them for patience and understanding while the work was carried out.
