The power outages which continued to yesterday disrupted power distribution to some areas, including the Tema metropolis, Ashaiman and some parts of Accra.

The fire

The Head of Communications of GRIDCo, Mr Albert Quainoo, in an interview with the Daily Graphic said there was a fire outbreak at  one of the system control rooms in Tema last Thursday, around 8:30p.m.

As a result of the fire, he said the control panels which were very important components of the distribution system were destroyed by the fire.

That, Mr Quainoo said, affected power distribution to Tema.

“The firefighters were able to get there early to control the fire and so other equipment were not affected,” he said.

Low voltage

He further explained that the situation caused low voltage in the system and as a result some parts of Tema had to be connected to the systems in Accra; a situation which overburdened the systems and caused low current in some instances.

As of the time of filing this story around 1 p.m. yesterday, Mr Quainoo said engineers were working assiduously to restore power to all the areas.

“We hope to restore power to the whole of Tema by midday” he stated.

Mr Quainoo indicated that the priority of the power distributors was to restore power to customers before they proceeded with investigations, after which the destroyed equipment would be replaced or fixed.

He apologised for the inconveniences caused by the outages.

At the time of going to press, the Chief Executive Officer of GRIDCo, Mr William Amuna, in an interview said the situation had been normalised with power restored to all areas.

Although the company was relying on an alternative to distribute power to its customers, he said the equipment destroyed by the fire would be replaced after investigations.
