An Accra-based radio station, Atinka FM, has organised a health-screening exercise for inmates of the Koforidua Prison in the Eastern Region.

The inmates, numbering about 624, were diagnosed of tuberculosis, malaria, chickenpox and other diseases.

The station also distributed drugs to the inmates.

The General Manager of the radio station, which forms part of the Tobinco Group of Companies, Mr Emmanuel Kyei Boatey, told journalists that the exercise formed part of the station's corporate social responsibility.

He said the government alone could not shoulder the burden of taking care of prison inmates and, therefore, corporate bodies should contribute their widow’s mite for the upkeep of the prisons.

Mr Boatey was hopeful that the exercise would go a long way to alleviate the plight of the inmates.

The Assistant Director of Prisons in charge of the Koforidua Prison, Mr Samuel Otabil, thanked the Tobinco Group of Companies for the gesture and used the opportunity to appeal to individuals and organisations to come to the aid of the prison.
