Husbands asked not to divorce wives with breast cancer

The President of Breast Care International and Chief Executive Officer of Peace and Love Hospitals, Dr (Mrs) Beatrice Wiafe Addai, has advised husbands not to abandon or divorce their wives when they become afflicted with breast cancer.

“Every woman,” she cautioned, “is pre-disposed to the condition, and needs love and care if afflicted, rather than the inhumane acts they are subjected to by husbands and some extended family members at the time they need their support and comfort most.”

The breast cancer surgeon was one of two special guests of honour at this year’s Annual Benefit Ball organised by the Accra Friendship Club (AFC) on the theme, “Breast and Prostate Cancer Awareness.”

Breast Care International (BCI) is the lead campaigner against the spread of the disease, focusing essentially on awareness creation and encouraging women to report cases on time because early detection is key to prevention.

The co-guest of honor, Dr De-Gaulle Moses Dogbatey, President of Medi-Moses Prostate Centre, highlighted the prevalence of cancers and stated that men equally should routinely undergo prostate check-ups for early treatment.

Screening
The two surgeons were unanimous that early detection and routine check-up/screening were key to surviving the conditions.

The Chairman of AFC, Mr Paa Gyima Gyenfi, explained that breast and prostate cancers were chosen, given their prevalence and the urgent need to disabuse the minds of the public of some misconceptions about the diseases.

He said AFC, in its bid to create awareness of the two diseases, would carry out a free breast screening programme at the Perez Chapel International at Dzorwulu in Accra next month for the benefit of the community and urged the public to patronise it, when the date was announced.

He promised to institutionalise the free breast and prostate cancer screening as part of AFC’s annual benefit balls.

The annual benefit ball is held to spread love, restore hope and forge social cohesion, as AFC mobilises support to carry out its philanthropic programmes countrywide.

AFC each year focuses on an issue with a national character and draws on the experience of experts and professionals for solutions for the common good.
