Residents of Adoagyiri-Zongo in the Eastern Region heaved a sigh of relief when a mechanised borehole  was inaugurated last Saturday to provide them with water.

The project was funded by  a local non-governmental organisation (NGO), the Indian Women Association of Ghana (IWAG), at a cost of  GH¢20,000.

Before the inauguration of the project, the residents had challenges with water supply and had to walk along distance to fetch water in nearby communities.

Water crisis

An acute water shortage hit the Nsawam-Adoagyiri municipality and its surrounding communities in January this year, forcing some of the residents to fetch water from the Densu River for domestic use.

The drying up of the Densu River, the main source of water for the Nsawam water plant, has been attributed to the severity of the recent harmattan, climate change, as well as human activities along the banks of the river.

The Municipal Chief Executive of Nsawam Adoagire Municipal Assembly (NAMA), Mr Ben Ohene-Ayeh, said following the  water crisis the Indian women took heed of the plight of  the people in the municipality and promised to construct two boreholes for them.

“Today, we are here to officially inaugurate one in Zongo, and hopefully, we will be looking forward to completing the other one in Sabon Zongo,” he said.

Promote goodwill

For her part, the President of  IWAG, Mrs Surinder Cheeme, said: “We were touched by the difficulties the communities were facing; with my executives we decided to donate these two boreholes as part of our social responsibility.

“Our mission is to promote goodwill between Ghanaians and Indians,’’ she stated.

Mrs Cheeme urged the beneficiaries to ensure that the facility  is always clean.

On behalf of the community, the Zongo Chief, Chief Bashiru Salifu, thanked the donors and wished them bountiful blessings from Allah.
