The Second Lady, Mrs Matilda Amissah-Arthur, has emphasised the need for the private sector in Ghana to invest in medical education.

She noted that the demand for medical practitioners in the country was so high that the government alone could not bear the responsibility of training the required numbers.

Mrs Amissah-Arthur said this when she inaugurated a private medical school, the Accra Medical College (ACM), in Accra.

The Second Lady observed that because the graduates produced by the various medical schools each year were not many health facilities were woefully understaffed.

Crucial role
The Minister of Health, Mr Alex Segbefia, said it was important for private medical training institutions to be given the necessary support because of the crucial role they played in the country’s healthcare system.

“It breaks my heart when qualified students are not able to gain admission to medical schools because of limited facilities.

“Private sector participation is, therefore, needed to augment government efforts to ensure that the many students who meet the requirement, get access to medical training,” he added.

Dedicated doctors
The President of ACM, Professor Afua A.J.Hesse, stated that the college was focused on raising the standards in medical education.

It also seeks to produce doctors, who will see medicine as a vocation and put their patients first in all their endeavours, she added.
