The classic adventure dubbed, “Zoomlion Walk for Life”, saw staff of the group walk and jog amid drumming and dancing to get to the finishing point at the Peduase Lodge on the mountain.

The more than an hour exercise also saw some of the workers exhibit their leadership skills by encouraging their colleagues who could no longer catch their breath during the walk not to give up.

Others took advantage of the captivating surroundings to take pictorial memories of the event.

Participating subsidiaries of the group were Union Savings and Loans, Appointed Time Screen Printing, Cosmopolitan Health Insurance, Rural Waste Service Limited, Waste Landfills Limited, Zoomlion Domestic Limited, and United Creative Solutions (UCS) and Alliance Waste.

The Managing Director of Zoomlion Ghana Limited, Mrs Florence Larbi, the Board Chairman of Jospong Group of Companies, Wing Commander Samuel Allotey (rtd), and the Group's Chaplain, Pastor Bright Kojo Addae, also took part in the walk.

Committed to work

Wing Commander Allotey told the Daily Graphic that as a waste management company, Zoomlion Ghana Limited was not only committed to ensuring the management of waste in the country but also the health of its workers.

“We believe that there is the need for a sound mind in a sound body while we are looking at the environment, sanitation, and health, we believe that we need to keep our staff also healthy”, he said.

Successes

Sharing the success story, Wing Commander Allotey said the company, since its establishment in 2006, had gone through many phases.

However, he said, amid all the challenges, it had been able to cover the whole value chain of the waste management and sanitation sector.

“We have created landfill sites, we have created various ways of treating waste, we have distributed waste bins and tricycles to help in managing waste”, he said.

Additionally, he said, the company had also established the Zoomkids Club Project, a hygiene and sanitation project operating in basic schools in the country to create environmental awareness among the young and old.

Challenges

However, he said, the challenge of the company over the decade had been the waste management culture of the public who perceive that waste collection was the responsibility of the government rather than a shared responsibility.

He, therefore, urged the public to help champion the sanitation cause by being responsible for the waste they generate while keeping their environment clean.

On the future plans of the company, Wing Commander Allotey said it planned to expand its operations to other West African countries and beyond, citing that it currently had branches in  Liberia, Togo, Angola, Zambia and soon to be in Cote d”Ivoire.

He said the company would also continue to decentralise its operations to reach the doorstep of the citizens while coming up with more innovative ways to manage waste in the country.

Additionally, she said, the Jospong Group shared a positive outlook, and was determined to position itself as one of the leading private sector actors, playing its rightful role in the growth and prosperity of Ghana and Africa.

Support the company

Mrs Larbi said the company would continue to work hard to solve the sanitation challenges facing the country.

However, she said, such solutions could only achieve greater results if the public helped implement them by effectively managing their waste.

“So we are pleading with the general public to join hands with the company to help improve the sanitation situation in the country”, he said.
