He said KNUST, with support from the government and its alumni, had made significant progress in areas such as physical infrastructural development, the refurbishment and retooling of its laboratories, studios and workshops some of which had attracted national attention.

"I want to personally express my appreciation to you for your continued support to the cause of the university. You have been and continue to be worthy ambassadors of your cherished alma mater. You have been advocates, spokespersons, public relations officers, and benefactors, etc.” he said.

Professor Ellis made the commendation at the maiden special awards and celebration of pioneer KNUST alumni organised by the Tema Chapter of the KNUST Alumni Association, during which some individuals recognised as Institutional Chief Alumnus were honoured, with some companies being awarded as corporate members of the KNUST Alumni Association.

Tremendous support

The Vice Chancellor of KNUST said throughout his six years’ journey as head of the institution, which will end in July this year, he had enjoyed tremendous co-operation and assistance from the alumni association and countless individual members of the fraternity.

He added that in view of the assistance, the university had been able to enhance its presence within the comity of universities by improving on its profile.

Professor Ellis, therefore, expressed appreciation to the alumni in general for their support and the Tema Chapter for instituting the awards.

A Presidential Advisor and former Minister of Education, Dr Christine Amoako Nuamah, commended the KNUST Alumni for their individual academic credentials and appealed to them to inculcate in the youth of today the spirit of commitment, selflessness and dedication towards the development of the country.

Commitment

"KNUST products are so committed to the development of this country and they do so without showing arrogance. This is something that is associated with KNUST products and they must find a way to inculcate in the youth of today to have this commitment mentality. The ‘so called’ unemployment graduate phenomenon is because people do not want to do certain 'dirty jobs' that some of you men and women did in your prime and have seen you rise to where you are today," she said.

Mr Koffie, on behalf of the awardees, expressed appreciation to the initiators of the programme for the honour done them.

"All is not lost for this country. We still have a bright future if only you and I will teach our children what it takes to build a nation and show commitment towards its development," he said.

The Global President of the KNUST Alumni Association, Mrs Eunice Akosua Ofosua Amoako, said apart from recognising the efforts of the awardees, the event was also to foster social networking.
