Kumasi heralds Yuletide with Xmas tree

Lady Julia Osei-Tutu, wife of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, last Friday night pressed the button to unveil the first Christmas Tree to be officially mounted in the open in Kumasi, to usher in the Yuletide.

The glittering green tree with many other colourful decorations, situated at the heart of Adum, the central business district of Kumasi, is to among other things, remind the people of Christmas. 

It was mounted by the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA).

The occasion was also used for an official Nine Lessons and Carols service, which was attended by people from all walks of life.

Tradition/modernity

It was a mixture of tradition and modernity where different religious choirs and traditional singers thrilled the audience dominated by market women and traders, with hymms and songs.

Lady Julia, the Regional Minister, Dr Samuel Sarpong and the CEO of KMA, Mr Kojo Bonsu, as well as the regional police commander, DCOP Kofi Boakye, took turns to read a lesson each.

A message from the Asantehene, read by Lady Julia, urged the privileged in the city to help the poor and the deprived, as well as maintan the culture of cleanliness. 

It also encouraged the residents to make the National Sanitation Day a success, and also keep their communities neat at all times, to reduce the threat of cholera and other avoidable diseases. 

Mr Bonsu, for his part, asked residents of the city to see the tree as a symbol of as a symbol of unity to drive the city forward in the coming year, inspite of their individual differences.
