Ghanaians and the world are invited to witness a momentous occasion as President-elect John Dramani Mahama takes the oath of office on Tuesday, January 7, 2025.

The swearing-in ceremony, set to unfold at the iconic Black Star Square in Accra, promises to be a grand celebration of Ghana’s democratic values and global standing.

Star-studded event  

Preparations are in full swing to host a ceremony that has already drawn significant national and international attention. According to Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson for the Transition Team, “so far, 10 heads of state have confirmed their participation.”  

Prominent attendees include Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Sierra Leone President Julius Maada Bio, and Kenyan President William Ruto. Delegations from the European Union, the United States, the United Kingdom, and global organisations like the Commonwealth and the African Development Bank (AfDB) are also expected.  

Security and logistical arrangements 

The Black Star Square is being meticulously prepared for the event, which will also serve as a parliamentary session. Only guests with invitation cards will be allowed into the swearing-in area, which will be under tight security. Additionally, a strict no-drone policy will be enforced in and around the venue.  

Road closures and traffic diversions have been announced to ease movement, and designated parking areas have been provided to accommodate attendees.

The ceremony will begin at 8:30am with guests already seated at a packed Black Star square, followed by parliamentary proceedings at 11:00am when President-elect Mahama and Vice President-elect Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang will be escorted to the Chamber for the official swearing-in.  

This historic event marks President-elect Mahama’s return to leadership and a new chapter in Ghana’s democratic journey. Ghanaians at home and abroad are encouraged to join the celebration by watching the livestream, available on multiple platforms.
