Man arrested for kidnapping girl, 3, at Nkoranza

A 22-year-old aggrieved customer of one of the microfinance companies in the Brong Ahafo Region has been arrested by the Nkoranza police after kidnapping a three-year-old girl as ransom for the payment of his deposit.

The suspect, Eric Otu, was said to have kidnapped the girl, a daughter of a sports presenter at a local radio station at Nkoranza and threatened not to release her until his GH¢15,000 with Jasta Motors, the microfinance company, was refunded to him.

Also in the grip of the police is Bridget Twenewaa, who the police said was directed by the suspect to receive the money on his behalf.

The little girl has meanwhile been reunited with her parents unharmed.

Deposit
Otu is said to have deposited the money with the company some time ago, but the company had not been able to pay back the deposits of its numerous customers in the region.

Daily Graphic’s checks from Nkoranza indicated that the father of the girl explained the genuineness of the microfinance concept in his dialect during one of his programmes to encourage the kidnapper to deposit the money with the company.

Demand
The Brong Ahafo Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police Mr Christopher Tawiah, told the Daily Graphic that Otu called the radio presenter on his mobile phone and informed him that he had kidnapped his daughter as ransom for the payment of his money.

He said the radio presenter, who reported the matter to the police, said although he agreed to find some money for Otu, he refused because the amount was not up to what he demanded.

Mob action
Meanwhile, eyewitnesses from Nkoranza told the Daily Graphic that some youth believed to be sympathisers of the radio presenter stormed the radio station yesterday to demand that the management accede to the demand of the kidnapper by paying the GH¢15,000 to facilitate the release of the girl.

The mob succeeded in locking up the station with padlocks, thus preventing the station from operating.
