The Minister of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Stephen Asamoah Boateng, has urged chiefs to mobilise their people to fight against poverty and underdevelopment to improve lives.

He said the era of battling each other physically was no longer relevant, and, therefore, entreated chiefs to lead their people to promote development in their communities.

The Chief Registrar at the Ministry, Baafi Nsiah, read the minister’s speech on his behalf at the inauguration of the Teshie Traditional Council at Teshie in Accra last Thursday.

The council was sworn in on November 6, 2023, by Justice Patricia Quansah, with the authorisation of the Chief Justice.

The swearing in and the subsequent inauguration ceremony followed the gazetting of seven chiefs under the council.

The council has not been in existence for many years due to chieftaincy disputes in Teshie.

Commencement of work

The council is expected to start work immediately with the formation of committees to resolve all outstanding disputes and the creation of its own standing orders to guide it.

The Chieftaincy Ministry will also assist the new council with technocrats and take it through the relevant laws that established the chieftaincy institution.

Apart from the registrar of the council, it lacks other relevant professionals to help drive it successfully.

Support

The minister pledged support for the council to succeed in its mandate.

Mr Asamoah Boateng said the role of chieftaincy in maintaining peace could not be underestimated, and urged the new council to marshall all powers within the law to promote peace and build bridges among all warring factions in the disputes.

He called on the President of the Council, Gbetsoolo Nii Ashitey Akomfra III, who doubles as the Teshie Mantse, to embark on series of training programmes for staff in conflict resolution, processes of sale of lands and leases.

The minister expressed the hope that with the formation of the council, all outstanding issues with regard to conflicts would be resolved.

Pledge

The President of the council promised to serve all Teshie residents with commitment, wisdom, love, integrity and compassion.

"We promise to listen to your voices, to share your concerns and to work tirelessly, day and night, for the betterment of our society," he said.

The Gbetsoolo Nii Akomfra also promised to personally work towards unity by bringing all Teshie people together in the spirit of cooperation with "so much mutual respect".
