The centre, which was set up by Modec Ghana and Tullow Ghana Limited, is meant to train, equip and develop the capacity of local welders for the oil and gas industry.

The inauguration was done on behalf of President John Mahama by the Minister of Transport, Mr Fifi Kwetey.

The event coincided with the 10th congregation of the RMU where 314 students were awarded various certificates after completing two and four-year courses.

RMU transformation

In an address read on his behalf, President Mahama said the inauguration of the welder training centre would equip RMU with the tools to train local welders for the oil and gas sector.

He said one of the challenges that hindered the growth of the oil and gas sector in Ghana was the unavailability of well-trained welders to perform various roles in that  sector.

The establishment of the centre, the  President said, was a major boost to open up the oil and gas sector and position it for a major transformation.

He, therefore, commended Modec Ghana and Tullow Ghana Limited for setting up the centre and urged the management of the RMU to provide quality training for the local welders.

RMU determined

The Vice Chancellor of the RMU, Professor Elvis Nyarko, said the establishment of the welder training centre was a major boost for the oil and gas sector.

"We can now train and equip our local welders with the know-how to work in the oil and gas sector," he said.

According to him, the centre has been installed with world-class equipment to provide cutting-edge training for trainees.

"This will serve the training centre and improve the electrical load system of the university. It can also handle all expansion works at the RMU," Professor Nyarko said.

Tullow Ghana Limited

The Managing Director of Tullow Ghana Limited, Mr Charles Darko, said the company was committed to building the capacity of Ghanaians for them to participate fully in the oil and gas industry.

"We will, therefore, continue to identify and embark on projects and initiatives that will promote capacity building, skills and knowledge transfer,"he said.

For his part, the Vice-President of Modec Ghana, Mr Puneet Sharma, said the company was more determined to support Ghanaian welders to attain the best training in welding for the oil and gas industry.
