Movement for political action on MDGs launched

A movement to mobilise civil society organisations (CSOs) to compel political action on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and climate change has been launched in Accra.

Known as Action 2015, the movement seeks to urge the government to take more action to address the needs of the people in respect of decisions on MDGs and climate change.

Facilitated by the Youth Bridge Foundation (YBF) in Ghana, the movement forms part of a global campaign initiated by an organisation known as Global Hub, which is scheduled to be launched in January 2015.

Involve citizens

Speaking at the launch, the Executive Director of YBF, Mr Seth Oteng, indicated that it was important to embark on the campaign at the national and local levels to showcase citizens’ demand for a better future.

Although Ghana has made strides in achieving some of the MDGs, he said there was no room for complacency in 2015, which is a critical year.

He said it was also important for citizens to make inputs into the processes for the final agreement on the MDGs, post 2015 MDGs and the convention meeting on climate change.

Mr Oteng said as part of the campaign, a sensitisation workshop to build the capacity of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and CSOs in the country was organised by the YBF after the launch of the campaign.

It was meant to empower NGOs and other organisations to enable them to educate and mobilise the grass roots for the campaign.

Global movement

In a live presentation via Skype from Peru, the Co-ordinator for the Global Hub for Action 2015, Madam Marie L’Hostis, said Action 2015 was a growing global citizens’ movement working to ensure better  future for the people worldwide.

She said two major meetings were expected to be held next year in respect of the MDGs and the climate change, hence the need for the people around the world to make contributions to the decisions that would be taken at the two meetings.

The two meetings are the United Nations (UN) Framework Post 2015 on the MDGs in New York in September, 2015 and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change in Paris in December, 2015.

With the aim to inspire actions that would empower the marginalised, she said the Hub also intended to collectively tackle the root causes of inequality, injustice, poverty and climate change in the world.

“We want a world where everyone is able to equally and freely participate in the decisions that affect their lives and hold governments, international institutions, private sector, civil society and other power holders accountable,” she said.
