NADMO denies diverting relief items

The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has denied allegations of diverting relief items from victims into the wrong hands instead of victims of the June 3 fire and flood disasters in Accra.

The Director of Relief and Reconstruction of NADMO, Mr Gavivina Yao Tamakloe, speaking on behalf of the organisation, said items so far distributed to victims, were based on figures given to NADMO officials in the affected districts.

That, he said, was to ensure that the items went to the disaster victims.

Speaking to the Daily Graphic in an interview in Accra, Mr Tamakloe said although they had distributed relief items to more than 30,000 flood and fire victims, there were still complaints that some victims had not received any kind of relief.

Complaints

Some victims of the June 3 twin fire and flood disaster had complained that relief items meant for them had rather been supplied to non victims, denying them of their share
Mr Tamakloe said in one instance, some people in the Ga Central Municipality, purporting to be victims, alleged that some relief items were being distributed to NADMO officials in the assembly’s building but upon investigations, it was realised that the officials were also victims.

It also came to the notice of NADMO that the complainants had either been served or were not victims at all.

Mr Tamakloe said all donations so far received by NADMO had been published at its website to demonstrate accountability and transparency.

“We have limited resources, and it is our responsibility to provide relief to the affected people but that did not mean that victims should exploit the organisation,” he added.

Affected NADMO officials

In the case of the NADMO officials who were also victims of the disasters, Mr Tamakloe said, “They were not favoured in any way whatsoever.”

He affirmed that NADMO officials who were given relief items had been investigated and found to be victims of the disasters.

Mr Tamakloe called on the media to cross-check information before publishing stories, to ensure that their publications did not ruin the credibility of organisations or individuals.
