NDC Benard Ahiakpor wins the Akatsi South seat

The candidate of the National Democratic Congress, Bernard Ahiakpor has won the Akatsi South constituency seat in the Volta region in a bye-election organised on Tuesday.

Mr Ahiakpor got 12,079 votes to beat the independent candidate, Evans Gadeto who got 8312 votes.

Other contestants, Anthony Tsikata of the Progressive People's Party (PPP), polled 369 votes whilst Wisdom Agovi of the New Vision Party polled 369 votes.

The Akatsi South seat became vacant after the incumbent Member of Parliament, Mr Edward Doe Adjaho was elevated as Speaker of Parliament. Mr Adjaho had been MP for the area since 1993.

The opposition New Patriotic Party boycotted the bye-election and did not field a candidate.

There was low turn-out of 49.02 percent.
