The Deputy Minister for Finance, Thomas Ampem Nyarko (MP), has inaugurated a seven-member Board for the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS), with a mandate to strengthen the production of accurate and reliable data to support national development.

At the ceremony, Mr Nyarko underscored the critical role of quality statistics in national decision-making, especially in the context of limited resources.

“Good data is key to making the right decisions,” he stated, urging the new Board to demonstrate strong leadership in ensuring that the GSS delivers accurate, timely, and relevant statistics to guide policy and planning.

He reaffirmed the government’s full support for the Board in the discharge of its duties.

The newly inaugurated Board is chaired by former General Secretary of the Ghana Trade Union Congress, Dr Anthony Yaw Baah. The other members are;

  • Dr Alhassan Iddrisu – Government Statistician
  • Mrs Nelly Mireku – Director of Research, Ministry of Finance
  • Dr Zakaria Mumuni
  • Prof Mariama Awumbila
  • Dr Philomena Nyarko
  • Dr Paul Kwame Butakor

Speaking on behalf of the Board, Dr Baah expressed gratitude to President John Mahama and Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson for the confidence reposed in them.

He pledged the Board’s commitment to supporting government priorities through enhanced statistical systems and outlined strategies to improve data quality and accessibility across sectors.

The GSS Board is expected to play a pivotal role in strengthening the statistical infrastructure that underpins Ghana’s development planning, monitoring, and evaluation.
