No escape for looters – Mahama says over 200 corruption cases being prosecuted
President John Dramani Mahama has revealed that more than 200 corruption-related cases are currently being investigated and prosecuted as part of his government’s commitment to accountability and the recovery of stolen state resources.
Addressing journalists at his first presidential media encounter since returning to office, Mr Mahama said the prosecutions are being pursued under “Operation Recover the Loot,” a national effort to retrieve misappropriated funds and hold offenders accountable.
He explained that so far, about 80 individuals have been interrogated, with several cases already progressing in court. “Over 200 cases are under active investigation, with about 80 people interrogated so far. Several prosecutions have begun progressing steadily and remain firmly on course,” the President disclosed.
Highlighting some examples, he cited the Republic versus Adu Boahen and three others, where trials had commenced, and the SkyTrain case, which now has a confirmed trial date. On the National Service Authority case, he noted that charges have been drafted and will be filed when the new legal year begins, while in the matter of the National Cathedral, government is awaiting a forensic audit from the Auditor-General before proceeding.
Mr Mahama stressed that his government’s insistence on due process should not be mistaken for inaction. “Yes, our insistence on doing things the right way may afford those who have looted this country some temporary relief, but let me be clear, it will not grant them permanent escape,” he declared.
The President assured Ghanaians that every case of corruption with sufficient evidence would be prosecuted “swiftly and firmly,” reaffirming his administration’s commitment to restore integrity to public service.
The media encounter, which was livestreamed on GraphicOnline, offered a platform for the President to update citizens on his Resetting Ghana Agenda, economic reforms, and social interventions, while also responding to questions on governance and accountability.
