Obengkrom touched by ‘angels’: Gets potable water, place of convenience

CHURCH on Purpose in Cape Coast, together with charitable missionary group from the Kettering Baptist Church, United States of America, has committed to bettering the lives of the people of Obengkrom in the Central Region.

They have provided the small farming community in the Abura Asebu Kwamankese District in Central Region with potable water.

According to Heather Chapman, Missions Director of the Kettering Baptist Church, during the group's missionary assignment to the area a few years back, they realised the people needed more than the word of God and salvation.

Showing God's love

Ms Chapman said they were moved to show God's love to the community by providing them with projects.

The church, together with its counterpart, Church on Purpose in Cape Coast, is working to provide a borehole for the community.

She said the partnering organisations looking at the needs further decided to build a place of convenience for the community to replace an old dilapidated one.

The Unit Committee Chairman for Obengkrom, Kofi Nyarko, said the provision of the water system for the community had helped to significantly reduce the hitherto many diarrhoea-related diseases that plagued the community.

"Before this project, the community depended on a river that ran through the Kakum forest close to the community nicknamed "forest".

Mr Nyarko said that led to diseases among the community members.

"There were many cases of diarrhoea diseases when we fetched and used the untreated water from the river," he stated.

Our plight was worsened when the river dried up during the dry season," he added.

Pastor Robert Benjamin Arthur of the Church on Purpose said God's will was to show the love of God to everyone and to let them understand that God is love.

He said it was important for the world to show love to communities in need and let others know about God through acts of love.

A resident of the community, Mary Tanoh, said the community was grateful for the decent sanitary facility provided for the community.

Relief

Responding to nature’s call was dangerous. “The wooden slabs used for the toilet structure were weak and dangerously laid. One could easily slip. I was afraid each time I used the place.

It was even worse for the younger ones. The new place brings a great sense of relief for us all and we are grateful," she stated.

Pastor Arthur said the partnering churches would work closely with the community to provide a school with teaching and learning materials.

The Senior Pastor of the Kettering Baptist Church, Pastor Bucas Sterling, for his part, pledged that the church would do its bit to improve the living conditions of the people as part of shedding the love of God abroad.

The Chief of the community, Nana Kassim Okyere Obeng, expressed gratitude to the partnering churches for the support.

He appealed for infrastructure and teaching personnel for the Obengkrom Basic School.

He also appealed for the tarring of the road to the community.

The Head teacher of the Obengkrom Basic School, Augustine Yeboah Damptey, said the school needed teaching and learning materials as well as furniture for a conducive teaching and learning environment.
