He said her discipline, dedication and commitment to duty should be emulated by young female prison officers as their contribution to making the Ghana Prisons Service (GPS) one of the most enviable and respected institutions in the country and the sub-region.

DDP Mr Awolugutu said this during a reception held in Tamale on Friday as part of a Pull-Out Ceremony for Supt. Twumwaah who is retiring from the GPS after 38 years of dedicated service.

Biography

Supt Twumwaah, who was born on July 13, 1955 at Adumase near Konongo in the Asante Akyem District, worked briefly with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) and was recruited into the GPS on April 16, 1977.

She passed out from the Prisons Officers Training School in February 1978 and during her active service, she earned an award for Long Service, a Good Conduct Medal (Prison Division), the June 4th Revolutionary Medal (1979) and the Golden Jubilee Medal (National, 2007).

Parade

As part of activities to mark her exit from the service, a Pull-Out Parade mounted by 30 female officers drawn from the Tamale Central and Female Prisons was held in her honour at the forecourt of the Central Prison.

After the parade, Supt Twumwaah sat majestically in a pick-up which was pulled out of the Central Prison yard by senior officers of the Northern Regional Command of the Prison Service as a mark of respect for her unflinching commitment and dedication to the ideals of the Prisons Service, and service to her motherland.

The ceremony for the handing over of the baton from Supt. Twumwaah to Chief Supt Millicent Owusu as the new officer in charge of the Tamale Female Prison at the parade was a solemn one.

Tribute

DDP Mr Awolugutu, who is also the Northern Regional Commander of the GPS, paid glowing tribute to the outgoing officer, and urged officers, women and men to be motivated by the ceremony to work hard.

Supt. Twumwaah was described as affable, humble, a mediator, counsellor and a peace loving person by her colleagues  at a church service which preceded the parade.
