Oven facility for Ngyiresia fishmongers

Technip Ghana, an offshore oil and gas services operator, has built and handed over a modern smoke oven facility to fishmongers at Ngyiresia, a fishing community in the Western Region.

The facility, which is fuel and time efficient, is aimed at alleviating health challenges, including cancer and chronic respiratory diseases linked to the use of traditional smoke ovens.

It is also to create a sustainable livelihood for the fishmongers in the Ngyiresia community who derive their livelihood from the sale of smoked fish.

Speaking at a handover ceremony, the Technip Site Manager at the Sekondi Naval Base, Mr Phillipe Monti, said Technip identified that many coastal communities had their main source of livelihood threatened with the advent of commercial production of oil and gas along the west coast.

He said the facility would enhance the operations of the fishmongers and create the avenue for them to double their production.

Earlier this year, he said Technip refurbished the old classrooms at the Nana Nketsia School in Essikado, Sekondi and constructed an additional three-unit nursery block at the school, together with a two-seater sanitary facility.

Boost fish smoking production

A representative of the Abudan Social Engineering Company, manufacturers of the facility, Mr Clement Guddy, said the smoke oven was capable of producing smoke fish at faster speed than the traditional method.

During the handover ceremony, 12 students from theTakoradi Technical Institute were equipped with skills to construct an oven to promote self-sustainability.
