Over 10,000 govt vehicles re-registered

More than 10,000 government vehicles have been re-registered by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) since the beginning of the exercise in 2014.

The re-registration of the vehicles was in response to a directive by President John Dramani Mahama that all state vehicles be re-registered to avoid their misuse for private engagements.

It was part of the government’s efforts to ensure prudent use of public resources.

The vehicles for the various ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) have been re-registered uniquely with green background number plates, a Government of Ghana (GV) prefix, the year of re-registration and a code identifying the MDA to which they belong.

The Accra Regional Manager of the DVLA, Mr Noah Tetteh Matey, told the Daily Graphic that the target was to register all the estimated 15,000 government vehicles.

He said some of the vehicles were at various workshops, while the re-registration was ongoing.

He said the DVLA was undertaking a mopping-up exercise to cover all the vehicles that were still at workshops or had been taken back to their respective institutions.

Background

The Minister of Transport, Ms Dzifa A. Attivor, launched the re-registration exercise of all government vehicles in January 2014.

She indicated then that the re-registration of those vehicles was to ensure judicious application of government expenditure, specifically on the utilisation of government vehicles.

Overall, 15,000 vehicles are expected to be registered at an estimated cost of GH¢1.5 million.

There are currently 25 ministries and 10 regional co-ordinating councils (RCCs).

The exercise, expected to be completed by the end of this year, is being carried out in all offices of the DVLA across the country and will cover vehicles belonging to MDAs, RCCs and metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies.
