Peace Council condemns vilification of Nigerians

The National Peace Council has condemned the recent vilification of Nigerians in some parts of the country describing it as uncalled for.

A member of the Council, Rev Dr Nii Amoo Darko said such actions could jeopardize the long-standing relationship that exist between the two countries.

He said this on the sidelines of a sub-regional experience sharing workshop on Building and Sustaining National Dialogue and Peace Structures organized by the Commonwealth and the Peace Council.

“This brawl that is going on between Ghanaians and Nigerians in our country is uncalled for. Because you see, it is important for us to acknowledge that we are a family in this sub region. Especially when it comes to Ghana and Nigeria,” Rev Darko said.

He said the two countries are more like brothers and therefore must hold on to the long-standing relationship that exist between them no matter the fracas.

He added that though there might be some bad nuts among the lot, Ghanaians must trust the security agencies to deal with such miscreants.

“Obviously there may be some criminals among them who might have found themselves in the country……and may be causing some act of criminality. Now let’s live that to the security agency to deal with”

“If we get to find out that some body is behaving in a manner that is unpleasant, the obvious thing is to report such persons to the security agencies for them to deal with [them]. We shouldn’t take the laws into our own hands and then close down their shops, attack them, stone and stone them,” he said.

He said Ghanaians must think of the welfare of their friends and family in Nigeria as any act carried out on Nigerians living in Ghana could be reciprocated on them.

“We need to remember that we also have some Ghanaians living in Nigeria and this kind of thing can backrush. And when that happens, what will become of our brethren there,” he questioned.
