Penplusbytes builds capacity of GTV staff

A capacity building strategy on new digital technologies in the newsroom has been organised for 45 news team members of Ghana Television (GTV).

The International Institute of ICT Journalism, Penplusbytes, with support from the Broadcasting Board of Governors (BBG) represented by the VOA West Africa Office of Strategy and Development, organised the training for the GTV staff.

The training, which took place at the New Media Hub in Accra, started with a formal opening attended by Mrs Joyce Ngoh, Director, Broadcasting Board of Governors (BBG) / Voice of America (VOA) West  Africa Office of Strategy and Development; Major Albert Don-Chebe (retd), Director-General, GBC, and Betty Apau-Opong, Acting Director of Television, GBC.

With the key objective of improving the quality of programme content as well as interacting better with their audiences, the team members were taken through quality edge new digital technologies to ensure they were abreast of new developments in modern newsrooms.

Experts from Penplusbytes took the GTV news team through details of what new digital technologies entailed, with critical lessons provided on the understanding of concepts of applying cutting-edge ICT techniques to the news generation and dissemination process. 

From the very basic to the more complex, participants were taught how to access, research and apply new digital tools as well social media network platforms in the news production cycle. 

According to Kwami Ahiabenu II, President of Penplusbytes, “the use of new digital technologies is rapidly rising in Ghana, with journalists and news media being offered unlimited opportunities to enhance the quality of their stories while interacting better with audiences.”

Jonnie Ayeetey, Head of GBC 24, said, “My objectives have been accomplished. I have been well trained in online reporting and all the pros and cons about video editing. I believe this knowledge I have acquired is a new experience which makes me different from other journalists.”
