Police engage Wa SHS after SRC Week attack; 17 suspects before court

The Upper West Regional Police Command has engaged students and staff of Wa Senior High School following a violent incident during the school’s SRC Week celebrations, with 17 suspects currently before the court.

The engagement, led by the Upper West Regional Police Commander, DCOP Francis Yiribaare, took place on February, 16 2026.

It followed an incident on January 28, 2026, when some Wa SHS students were attacked by students from another school during SRC Week activities.

Addressing about 2,000 students and staff, DCOP Yiribaare said the Police Command would continue to protect educational institutions in the region.

He stated that schools must remain places for learning and character development, and not grounds for violence or unlawful conduct.

He warned students against misconduct, vandalism and involvement in illicit drugs, noting that criminal behaviour at a young age could affect their education and future prospects.

DCOP Yiribaare urged the students to resolve disputes peacefully and to work with school authorities and the police to maintain order on campus.

The Headmaster of Wa Senior High School, Alhaji Iddrisu Thirdman, thanked the Police Command for its prompt response after the incident.

He said the school would continue to work with the police to maintain discipline and lawful behaviour among students.

The Police Command said the suspects arrested in connection with the attack are standing trial, while investigations continue.
