The suspect, whose name was given by the police as Abdullai Ibrahim, 26, was apprehended at his hideout at the Liberia Camp, Budumburam, near Kasoa.

At a news conference in Accra last Wednesday, the Accra Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Mr Christian Tetteh Yohuno, said, “Ibrahim was smoked out from his hideout on July 21, 2015.

“His arrest brings to three the number of suspects arrested in connection with the Amanfrom robbery attacks. Strenuous efforts are underway to get the other suspects arrested and get them to face the full rigours of the law,” he said.

Two suspects sentenced

The first two suspects, Isaac Kene, 25, a Togolese, and David Ahetor, 25, a night watchman and native of Mafi Dove in the Volta Region, were identified by residents of Amanfrom at an identification parade by the police on July 4, 2015.

They have since been put before the Accra Circuit Court, presided over by Mr Francis Obiri, a High Court judge sitting as an additional circuit court judge.

The accused persons were found guilty and sentenced to 35 years in prison with hard labour.

Background

The arrests followed reports by some residents of three suburbs of Amanfrom, namely, Top Town, Galilea and Iron City, of an increased wave of robbery in the area.

At dawn on Sunday, June 28, 2015, a gang of six robbers allegedly attacked residents of about six houses at Amanfrom and escaped before the police arrived on the scene.

Some victims sustained gunshot and machete wounds, while the robbers made away with an unspecified amount of cash, mobile phones, laptops and other valuables.

Three women were also allegedly raped by the robbers.
